Implants are titanium screws that are placed in the jawbone. They serve as a replacement for a tooth root and are used to attach, for example, a crown, bridge, or denture. Implants are firmly anchored in the bone and are therefore not removable. For this reason, implants must be well-maintained and brushed, just like your natural teeth. An implant can be placed once a (fully grown) person has reached maturity. However, the oral and general health of the individual must allow for it.

In addition to “filling” a gap, an implant also helps preserve bone and maintain the stability of the dental arch. When one or more teeth/molars are missing, the jawbone will shrink because it no longer has a function. Furthermore, teeth/molars adjacent to or opposite the open space may shift.

To place implants, there must be sufficient bone available. In some cases, a bone restoration procedure is necessary either prior to or during the placement of the implants. The process of placing an implant and attaching the final crown, bridge, or denture takes several months due to the healing and integration of the implant. This can range from 6 weeks to several months, depending on the specific situation.
